Picture and Prayer St Ninian of WhithornStained Glass by Douglas StrachanIn St Margaret?s Chapel Edinburgh Castle.September 16th is the feast day of St Ninian of Whithorn. Ninian lived a hundred years before Columba and flourished around the year 400AD. He built a whitewashed chapel ?Candida Casa - in Whithorn in Wigtown-shire, which some regard as the cradle of Christianity in Scotland. It has been a place of pilgrimage certainly since the 7th century. Little is known about Ninian himself, which probably explains why Columba is given pre-eminence, although his mission was so much later. It is believed that he came from a Christian community and went from Scotland to Rome to be educated more fully in the Christian faith; returning to Scotland as a Bishop.Let us Pray in thanksgiving for the life and witness of St Ninian, for the gift of the Christian Faith to this land, and for the continuing preaching of Gospel message.Let us Pray for all those who in quiet humility live out the Christian faith in daily life. Let us Pray for those who are teachers of the faith ? theologians in university faculties and theological colleges, local ministers and preachers.Let us Pray for those who are seeking a deeper understanding of their faith, and striving for a deeper commitment in faith, and pray that we may be among them.
